RVL and Michelin launch new tyre pressure management system
Jan, 2018
Tyre pressure matters!
If a tyre explodes on a huge earth-moving truck inside a mine, that can prove to be a costly scenario. For a start, the tyre itself can cost up to $30k. Then there’s the 8 hours it can take to change the tyre, at a loss of production cost valued by Michelin at around $170k. It all starts to add up quite quickly!
For the last 15 years, we have been working with Michelin to design and update the MEMSĀ® connected tyre pressure management system. The MEMSĀ® 4 version, which has just been launched, adds real-time GPS and accelerometer data to create a complete monitoring and reporting system. Using a hand-held PDA, the driver or manager can monitor, in real time, the data transmitted from an electronic device strapped to the tyre. Consequently, we have eliminated the need for on-site tyre pressure checks, saving valuable time, but also increasing the life of the tyre and ultimately boosting the mine’s efficiency and productivity.
During this incredible collaboration across companies and technologies, we are proud to have assisted in both the electronics design and the manufacture of this system. Our electronics engineers and our IPC-trained assembly technicians have been vital to the success of the project.
