Case Study: Brigade – AHD to PAL/NTSC Video Converter

The Challenge

Brigade, a leading provider of vehicle safety and collision detection systems, approached RVL to develop a robust AHD to PAL/NTSC video converter to complement its existing range of cameras and display units.

The product needed to reliably convert modern AHD camera outputs into legacy analogue formats while operating in harsh automotive environments. Key challenges included environmental sealing, EMC performance, and ensuring consistent video quality across a wide range of installation conditions.

The Solution

RVL delivered a complete end-to-end development programme, from initial chipset evaluation through to production manufacture.

At the outset, we conducted a detailed review of available video processing chipsets to identify the most suitable platform. This led to the selection of a specialist ASIC partner, with whom we developed a close working relationship to tailor the solution to Brigade’s requirements.

We then designed and developed a prototype PCBA, integrating the selected chipset into a robust and manufacturable design. Early prototypes were supplied for extensive field trials, enabling Brigade to validate performance in real-world vehicle installations.

In parallel, RVL managed EMC pre-compliance testing to identify and mitigate potential risks ahead of formal certification. This proactive approach ensured a smooth transition into full compliance testing.

To meet the demanding environmental requirements, we worked closely with Brigade and a specialist third-party supplier to implement a sealed overmoulded enclosure. This ensured the final product achieved the necessary durability, ingress protection, and long-term reliability.

Key Contributions

  • Evaluation and selection of suitable AHD video processing chipset
  • Collaboration with specialist ASIC supplier to optimise performance
  • Full schematic capture and PCB layout for production-ready design
  • Prototype build and validation support
  • Support for extensive real-world field trials
  • EMC pre-compliance testing and risk mitigation
  • Coordination with third-party partner for sealed overmoulded enclosure
  • Design for manufacture and transition to volume production

The Outcome

The final product successfully met Brigade’s technical and environmental requirements and was validated through comprehensive field trials and EMC pre-compliance testing.

RVL now manufactures the product in annual volumes of approximately 1,000 to 3,000 units, providing Brigade with a reliable, high-quality AHD to PAL/NTSC Video Converter that integrates seamlessly into its wider vehicle safety ecosystem.

Ownership & Partnership Approach

A key part of RVL’s approach is that all design IP is transferred to the client on project completion. This gives customers complete freedom and control over their product, including the ability to choose their preferred manufacturing partner.

In practice, the majority of clients choose to continue working with RVL for ongoing manufacture . This reflects the value of maintaining continuity from design through to production, as well as the confidence built during the development process.
